Are You in Time of Waiting?
PURPOSE
6 min read
Have you ever wanted something so badly you could feel it? You prayed, worked, and dreamed—yet it was not happening. Maybe God even gave you a glimpse of your future, but the reality hasn't caught up yet. I’m sure you have, but if you haven’t experienced it before, don’t worry—it’s coming. It’s inevitable; God sometimes makes us wait. And it’s not because He is mean or because He is withholding something from us, but because He is building us, preparing us, or protecting us.
If there is anything that I have learned from God, it is the importance of walking in pace with the Holy Spirit. Sometimes, we may want to go ahead of ourselves and rush, and sometimes we are too slow and not in a position where the Holy Spirit would want us to be in a given season. Hence, it’s very important to walk hand in hand with Him and be where He is.
We may not realise it, but there are always consequences if we are not aligned with the Holy Spirit. If we are ahead of ourselves, we may be facing battles we are not prepared for or under pressure we don’t know how to handle; and if we are too slow, we may miss out on the blessings God had for us in the season. We need to learn to walk where the Holy Spirit leads us and match His speed.
So if you are in a season of waiting, I want to encourage you today. God is preparing the scene for you like He did for Jesus when God made His enemies His footstool. We need to remember that even though a time of waiting is designed to build our character, patience, faith, strength, and stamina, it’s also a time of preparing others affected by what it is to come. It’s not all about you; everything else needs to be aligned as the door is opened so you are not sabotaged by external things. I hear the Holy Spirit saying even now, "Just trust me as I work everything out for you."
I get that the time of waiting can be so dull and challenging, but see this time as a gift and use it wisely. If you are waiting for ministry, spend time with God, study the Bible, and learn His ways. If it’s business, learn about business now—customer service, strategy, leadership, finances, marketing, and anything else you may need. If it’s a relationship, become the partner you expect your future spouse to be. Learn to love others, be kind, caring, understanding, supportive, and listening partner. Learn to communicate and what godly relationship looks like - what role are you to play. What is it that you want in a relationship and what do you want it to look like. If it’s a child, learn about raising children, see what the Bible has to say about it, and praise the Lord already for the child. Whatever it may be, God doesn’t give you the time to sit and wait, but to develop and grow. Don’t waste the time because you will never get it back, and if you don’t do what you need to do in this season, you may be struggling in the next season.
Imagine getting a "green light" on the ministry God called you to and then not having the discipline to pray and study the Bible. Then you have invitations coming in, but you are running on an empty tank, which then creates unnecessary pressure and stress on you. Now, that thing that should be a blessing and joy is a burden you can’t bear. Or imagine starting a business and growing it, but having no real idea how to run it. You get angry and frustrated customers because they are not receiving their goods or services as expected. Now, you may be justifying it in your mind because of circumstances, but the real issue is a lack of preparation.
I wanted to quickly drive somewhere to drop something off and not really give it much time, but unexpectedly there were some cars in my way where normally there is no traffic. I was getting frustrated, and the Holy Spirit spoke to me in that moment and said, "Waiting can make you frustrated sometimes." So if you feel frustrated because of waiting, the Holy Spirit understands it. He is not ignorant of our feelings, so you can go to Him with them and pour out your heart to Him if needed; but God is not afraid to put us in temporary pain for a long-term gain.
We may not always see it, but there are always consequences for our actions, especially those that affect our purpose. I’m always reminded of Kathryn Kuhlman, who married someone she fell in love with even though God warned her many times not to do it, and she knew very well that she was not to marry him—you know things like this in your spirit. She said that straight after the wedding, she knew that she had made a mistake. She was in ministry before the marriage, and as soon as she married the guy, her ministry stopped and God was not using her anymore, even though the man was a pastor himself. She would be in the services and cry because she was not in her own purpose due to disobedience. After a few years, she had a decision to make and she left her husband, aligned back to God, and God restored her ministry. She became one of the most powerful healing evangelists.
You may wonder why God couldn’t use her like that while she was married to the man. Well, because you can’t give something you don’t have. He didn’t have the calling nor the anointing to cover her on that level. She was capped under his covering and couldn’t function in her calling. This is why it is important to be careful who you marry. Sometimes, we try to force something, thinking that they will change, grow, or see a potential that they themselves are not seeing or wanting to achieve, and we limit ourselves.
Very early in my relationship with the Lord, I learned that you can’t make someone become something they don’t have in them. They don’t have it, and that’s the end of the story. We all have different callings, gifts, and talents, and you can’t make other people align with yours if they are not called for it. Many women don’t fulfill their destinies because of the covering they put themselves under. You can’t change a man, and you can’t force a glove that doesn’t fit. The same goes for men. So many men don’t fulfill their destinies because they tie themselves to women who can’t support their vision or respect them. Don’t try to force a square shape into a circle shape. Be attentive to the Holy Spirit and follow His leading.
It is better to suffer for a little while than to suffer the consequences of your actions your whole life. Sometimes, we may want to satisfy our flesh in a moment and create a mess in our purpose. Abraham and Sarah are such a good example of this. They didn’t trust God and didn’t want to wait, and so they created Ishmael with their own flesh. What a consequence—not only strife and quarrels in their family, but generations affected. We need to be careful with how we conduct our lives.
Yes, God will allow us to endure for a little while, but only because there is a greater fruit coming out of it. Think about how we are being conditioned to run away and avoid anything that is challenging, a struggle, painful, or difficult; but God literally leads us to these things because they create character in us and make us grow. His light shines best in darkness, and strength/grace is manifested in weakness. That’s why God puts us through a process, even if it hurts for a little while. The Bible talks about it all the time. It teaches us to be dependent on the Holy Spirit.
“Weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.” – Psalm 30:5
Jesus is our greatest example. He endured the cross for us. Jesus suffered for the joy set before Him, but then enjoyed the glory. Did you know that He has been given a name above every other name because of what He suffered for us? In the same way, God will reward you if you endure your own cross and follow God’s leading for your life.
“Fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” – Hebrews 12:2
So if you’re struggling with waiting today, I want to encourage you to endure it until God fulfills His promises, because He is faithful and surely will finish what He has started. His word can’t fall to the ground and not perform. Learn to wait with purpose and use the time for preparation.
